Year End

The end of a very successful year, one that would be very hard to beat. It is by far the most miles I have done in one year and also the most alive I felt in one year. Yes it was very time consuming to spend all that time cycling but the accomplishment was well worth it. The funny thing is the more you ride this vehicle, the better and faster it gets. I doubt I will be able to match those miles in 2012 which would be unfortunate, but the focus would be to get more Pterovelo's on the road.

47.4 mi - Poker Run

Seven stores to stop at and seven cards to collect. What fun, but hard on the knees. Ended with a 9,10,J,K. So close!

20 mile - Round the lake with Greg

The weather is so nice now. It is a shame I don't cycle more. Will have to start commuting again.

17 mile - Foggy Morning

It was a beautiful foggy morning. Not many cyclist showed up today, I guess it was the perfect sleep in morning. The fogging almost became a problem then I remembered that I have some emergency cleaning wipes in my tool kit. That saved the ride. I is a must to have a clean windshield for days like this otherwise the fogging inside the windshield becomes a problem. So I skipped the Sunday ride and went to Elemental for coffee. Awesome!

50 mile

Fun ride to Norman this morning. Met with Joe and Gabby and gave the kids a ride in the Pterovelo. Joey loved it so much I think I have my first customer, soon as his feet touch the pedals.

20 mile

Cold front came through today and left us with a 30mph N wind. It was so strong and the lake was so dry that Greg complained that the air feels like sandpaper. So we headed South on Portland.

6 mile

27 mile

Tiffany met me at the coffee shop and so the Sunday morning coffee ride turned into a breakfast rider. Had some couple of pancakes and caught up with the pack again at the end of the River Trail.

10 mile

A trip to the mall and the bicycle shop. Got my first parking ticket at the mall today. I am considered to be a motor cycle and should park in the designated area - Awesome!. My legs definitively is not getting enough exercise lately. They were burning pretty bad trying to stay with the traffic.

Saturday, October 8, 2011

15 mile

For some reason a quick 2 mile trip to the shop in a velomobile almost always turn into a trip around the lake and sometimes even more. Does not even matter what the weather is doing, the more it rains the more you want to go ride. It is so hard to stop going. When I had my mountain bike it was "...ohh no it's raining. I better take the car."

32 mile

The Watonga OK Race the Rail cycle race was today. We had a very strong South wind to fight going out but the down wind leg was pretty nice. I wish more people would get into velo's for it is not so much fun to race against DF's. Feels like cycling to work, no competition.

24.9 mile

Went to the OCU Regatta this afternoon. It is just an amazing event.

11.2 mile

Elemental Coffee Rosters had a street party tonight and it was a huge success.

16.6mile

Did a quick ride around lake Hefner tonight with Greg who was on my electric Catrike. He loved it!

31.9mile

After a good post ROAM inspection it turned out my chain had had it. I replaced it and the drive train is nice and smooth again. Got +8000miles on the first chain.

37.5 mile

The wind picked up throughout the day and I ended with a 12-17mph head wind going home. The 105F heat also did not help much. I stopped at a service station to get something cold to drink. The lady behind the counter asked me to follow her and she took me straight to the walk in freezer to cool down. Is that service or what!

32.2 mile

The ride to work was amazingly fast. The tail wind must have helped but still it is the best time I have made to work so far.

ROAM - D.C.

We made it to the mall just in time for the rain. Did get some photos though. It started to rain to hard so I left the group and went to find a restaurant. Great steak sandwich!

Wednesday 8/24/11

It was hard to get up. The day started with a very nice bike trail that was a good warm up. But if you get a bunch of excited guys together and put them in something fast it will most definitely end up in a race. So just before the coffee break it ended in a heavy sprint. I got a little behind on the uphill and started to make up on the other side. I then saw the railroad xing up ahead. Usually I would slow way down for them but this time I had some velos in my sight and there were no slowing down. The railroad tracks were on a little bump so I decided to speed up even more. That way if they are. very rough then I will be a little lighter going over them with the help of the bump. I hit the bump and the velo went straight into the air! It rolled a little to the right, my heart skipped and the Pterovelo was flying. It landed slightly skew and on the right front wheel. With more luck than anything else it straightened out and put all wheels on the ground. I will have to admit it took a whole coffee to get my legs to stop shaking. From coffee stop to lunch I was a bit zapped from energy and it was a hard ride with slow uphills. Lunch could not come soon enough and after the fuel up the engine ran much smoother again. Daniel, Markus, Andreas and I followed a very nice strong steady pace to the next meeting point. The whole groups assembled again and we did the last 15 miles as one group into Georgetown which was an amazing experience. The day ended with lots and lots of celebration and cup cakes.

Monday 8/22/11

The last two days have been a blur. There were lots and lots of mountains and here and there some pretty bad roads. The best is my mom came to visit for the three days so it kind of was like a small holiday as well. I also want to thank my mom Rina, my dad Frans, Orman and Betsie for the donations they made towards my cross country ride. It was very unexpected and very much appreciated. Also to all the family that help with encouragement through facebook and emails. It helps much more than you think.
For the ride there is only two days left and I am right now busy climbing a nice long long hill.

Went past Medina today. Sure is a town everyone should visit.
My Mom came to visit me and we arrived at the hotel in Streetsboro at the same time.

Friday 8/19/11

Ohio is flat! Velomobile country. Everybody here should have one. On the highway today I was able to keep between 25-30mph for the most part. I did not follow the track today, but stayed on the highway as much as possible. It made for some fast runs. If the computer is correct the. it was a 22.3mph avg but I will have to check the GPS.
Tree weeks into the trip and now I am starting to feel strong and fit. The only problem, my throat and stomach is acting up a bit. Just maybe I've had a little to much chocolate milk and not enough vegetables.

Thursday 8/18/11

8/18

I was the first to be out of camp this morning. The raccoons got into my bread and peanut butter and helped themselves to some nice sandwiches. So I got out early to find some breakfast. Went through some very nice country roads in the morning. Daniel caught up with me again and they meant my speed went also went up. That put us at the lunch stop very early so we missed out on a catered Amish meal
that was organized by Cyber. We made it to camp early and had a very nice relaxed afternoon.
The left tube blew out today so I replace the BigApples with Kojak's. Later the day I also had a flat. That now puts it at 9 flats.

Wednesday 8/17/11

8/17

It was real good to sleep in a bed last night. We had Chicago style pizza last night and again this afternoon. I am pizza'd up. It was so exciting to see Chicago again. There is nothing to report on the cycling because it was only 60 miles and was in city traffic for the most. We only have 7 days left and part of it will be nice and flat and the other part might be very hard. We will just have to see and hope for the best.

At Chicago at the fountains

Tuesday 8/16/11

Tuesday 8/16/11

And again my GPS did not want to load the track for the day so I had to stick with people that had a working GPS. It made for a slower longer day but it was a lot of fun to stay with Hasse and help each other with drafting. Nick and Wes also joined us for parts of the ride. We stopped at a little town and had the best sandwich ever with fried cheese! Four cups of coffee and lots of water. We stayed there for quite a long time and watched all the others passed. So tonight we are treaded with a very nice hotel stay in Evanston.

And again the GPS wants to make a turn in Africa for some reason.

Monday 8/15/11

Monday 8/15/11

Started of very slow with three big hills to cross. Grade 7&8! Avg 12mph for the first half of the day and it brought the moral down a bit. Lucky for me Daniel caught up with
me with his electric Quest and it helped a bunch. He stayed in front of me so I had someone to chase. The last 40 miles we stayed between 25-32mph. It make time goes by pretty quick then. We got to the pub in Madison and enjoyed a nice Guiness. Stayed there way to late and only got to camp at 8:30 in the dark after a couple of wrong turns. It started of hard and boring and ended in a blast!

According to the GPS I made a stop in Asia but don't believe everything a computer tell you.

We went from Hastings to Onalaska. Left Minnesota and are now in Wisconsin. I did not feel very strong today but still kept up a good speed and made very good time.

8/12 & 8/13

I took it very easy these two days. Fri was only 100mi and Sat was 60mi. These rest days were very good for the body and everything is starting to feel normal again.

Thursday 8/11/11

Thursday 8/11/11

One long day! One of the hardest so far. Mentally and physically I was a little tired. I am trying to go as slow as I can but maybe I am pushing still to much. Tomorrow I will make sure I am first to leave and last to arrive.
The road surface was also bumpy today and without suspension it is hard on the already hurt feet.

Wednesday 8/10/11

Wednesday 8/10/11

The day started off with a moderate climb. I felt good and fresh so I did as much as the achilles would allow. I caught up with Josef Janning in his blue car on Quest and we stayed together for the most part of the day. He is a very strong rider and thanks to him I was pushing a little more on the climbs. There were construction on hw12 so we had to take a detour that ended up on a 5 mile gravel road. The quest was able to manage the rough road but I opted to get out and push. No fun! By the end of the gravel road the rest was starting to caught up with me. Once on the Tarmac the lunch stop was not to far away. I bought a bag of ice and I iced my feet while I was enjoying a Subway sandwich. With nice fresh feet the last stretch of 28 miles was a lot of fun. I was able to keep it up to 30mph for a good part of that 28 miles.

Tuesday 8/9/11

Tuesday 8/9/11

Today was the biggest millage day of the whole trip. We did 166miles today. Unfortunately for me I had to take it slow because of the Achilles. So all the uphills were super slow but I was still able to speed up on the downhills. When I scoot fwd in the seat it is a bit better on the achilles but worse on the knees so I had to play around with my seat position all day. With bad feet and all I still made good time. To to

Monday 8/8/11

The rest day helped with stamina today. It started of with a fairly big hill this morning. I was able to push fairly hard up the hill and made a good start. The rest of the day was more rolling hills and the tail wind picked up and just got stronger through the day. The rest of the day was nice and fast. Once we entered ND the road turned super smooth, what a pleasure. Until the road stopped and turned into dirt. There were about 6miles of construction going on and I decided to push the velo most of the way. Martin and Machiel caught up with me just when I got back on the asphalt and we pushed pretty hard on the last 12 miles. I could feel my right ankle complain a little. Tonight I iced the feet, soaked them in some Epsom salt and rubbed some Voltaren on them. Right now they are much better.

Saturday 8/6/11

Sat 8/6

153.9mi. 7:57
avg 19.3mph
max 58.4mph

The day went very well right up to the last 15 miles. Had two flat tires that broke my wind a little, but all and all it was a great day.

Friday, August 5, 2011

Friday 8/5/11

94.4mi 4:19
avg 21.8mph
max 56.1mph

Was a very nice short day today. Mostly downhill with a couple of good climbs. Felix and I stayed together for the most and it was very nice.

Thursday, August 4, 2011

Thursday 8/4/11

126.9mi 7:30
avg 16.9mph
max 64.9mph

Blood, sweat and tears today. Crossed one more mountain today. The good thing is it was real pretty.
It felt like I had flat tires all day long! The legs just did not want to perform. I did not do very good today.
Was running on a 53 teeth all day and really missed the 72 on the down hills.

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Wednesday 8/3/11

130.9mi 8.01
avg 16.3mph
max 66.5mph

We left Missoula today fairly slow. Just had some written direction to follow. Once we got to the interstate it picked up a bit. Mark came up with a brilliant idea to paint arrows on the road where we should turn and once I got to those it was smooth sailing until I missed one arrow and came to a dead end. Had to turn around but my luck it was not to far off.
At last we got to our big climb. It was a little shorter and about the same grade of 5% just like the last one but I made a point to take it as slow as I could. I swapped the 73 tooth chain ring for a 49 tooth the night before and that allowed me to spin easy at 4mph but still I found it a little harder than before. Got to the top at last. The Rockies was concord! Going down was good but I did not have the 73t to push so gravity was the only option.
So we got to the bottom and reached Helena and I thought game over but the gps said still 20mi to go. So it turned out that the 20mi had 2 big climbs of grade 7.5% !!!!! Very tough and I was very glad I swapped those chain rings.

Monday, August 1, 2011

Monday 8/1/11

117.5mi. 6:45
avg 17.4mph
max 43.3mph

We started the day at Three Rivers Resort. Followed the river again but it was a slightly higher grade than yesterday. I stayed with the Quests for a while. They were going up the steep hills a little faster than I was comfortable with and had one or two lower gears than me. But I could out run them on the down hills and they did not catch back up. Half way up the hill I found Daniel with his electric Quest. We played touch and go for a bit and then I tugged in behind him and we made very good time going up. The last 9 miles going up the pass was between 4% to 6% all the way and I could keep a steady 5.5mph up the hill. We got to the top just in time! Feet got real hot. We hanged out for while before we took on the down hill. The road down was a little bit twisty at first so I did not pick up to much speed, but it was long and steady. I managed to keep it around 40mph all the way down to a gas station just before Lolo. We stopped again and for a while. Went down another 3miles to Lolo and found a place to eat. Then it was a nice fast pace through Missoula to the KOA.

Saturday, July 30, 2011

Saturday 7/30/11

150.2mi  8:50
avg 17.0mph
max 63.9mph

Started of with nice flat ground and then it was a steady climb with three big climbs and 3 very nice down hills. First one was very scary because I had now idea how the brakes would do. Second one was not that fast but the third one was super. All the way from 2300ft down to 780ft between 45 - 64mph. Got into camp after sunset. I think the rest stops were maybe a little to long. To sum it up it was very good, the first climbs are now out of the way and they were not bad at all.
My left MS Plus tire blew out today, so I had to wait on top of the hill for quite some time for a replacement. I had to switch to Kojacks in the front for I did not think of bringing extra tires! So it might be a little faster but we will see about the punctures still.

Friday 7/29/11

134mi 6:51
avg 19.6mph
max 54.1mph

Started of great today. There were some construction on part of the roads that made navigating a little difficult and a lot of people got lost. At one junction in the road I had to wait a hour for someone to show up and confirm to go left or right. Did not mind to much, the legs needed the rest. The last thirty miles I had so bad hot spots on my feet I had to take the shoes of and cycled bare foot. That helped. Will also make sure that tomorrow I eat better. All and all it was not to bad.

25mi / 40.2km

Sunday OBS ride with the club. This was the first ride with the Contour, just a little test to see how it works.

Friday, July 15, 2011

33.3mi / 53.5km

Going home today was very hard. Picked the road with the most hills and stoplight because it was the shortest. Turns out the short one was the wrong choice.

34mi / 54.7km

First time in a long time that I cycle to work again. I could feel the legs are not use to it. Still made pretty good time.

Sunday, July 10, 2011

Sunday, June 26, 2011

26.5mi / 42.6km

I pushed it maybe a little to hard tonight. After 20mi my knees were starting to act up and I had to slow down and head back home. I guess a month of no cycling will do that to you. Will have to take it easier for a little while until the engine is up to speed again.
The brakes got replaced today. New rotors and pads. It is now working much smoother again. The second set of pads got worn out so quickly I figured the rotors must have got damaged somewhere down the line. They did have a lot of grooves in them.

The improvements on the door is working great. New latches, door stop, rail, handle and lock. There is no more rattles and the ride is much quieter. Very nice improvement.

34mi

At last the Pterovélo is back together again. It has been in the garage now for 4 weeks. There were a couple of small upgrades that I wanted to get done before Roll Over America. I did not expect that it would take me that long to get them all done and the weeks without cycling made me a little nervous. I worried about the fitness but also the temp went up quite a bit since I last been in side the velo. All proofed to be ok today. I only went 34mi but it felt all good. The temp was 104°F and although it was hot, it was not a problem at all. Personally I think that it is much more comfortable in the velo at that heat than on a regular bicycle. First off all you are in the shade most of the time. Secondly, I could control the amount of air that flows over my body for cooling and don't get blown by a 30+mph hot wind that sucks away all your sweat and leaves you dry and hot.
I had the Big Apples on all three wheels today and enjoyed the soft ride a lot.

The gps missed the loop that went around lake Hefner today.( forgot to turn it on)

Sunday, May 29, 2011

60mi / 96.5km

Sunday morning and left for Hutchinson. The wind was very strong SSE at 25mph which helped a lot. The lift over the velo lifted the door so I had to stop to put extra bungy cords on the door. In the process I got a flat tire in the back and had to stop a second time to change tubes. Still made very good time. I did get a little hot inside with the strong tail wind but I kept the door closed as long as I could. Only opened it when I turned of at Yoder to go North.
This is the best avg to date. Almost the whole trip was uphill but with a tail wind.

Monday morning we loaded the velo on the trailer for the first time and head home in a 30-40mph head wind. The trailer did very well and pulled easy. I do need to change the wheels though and repack the bearings. But still we got a 35mpg avg all the way into that strong wind.

19.1mi / 30.7km

I met up with Jim Aiken in Wichita this afternoon. He owns a Flevo AW. It is the first velo that I lay my eyes on and what a treat. We went for a little joy ride enjoying the scenery. The suspension on the AW is very impressive and seems to make quite a difference.

69.8mi / 112.3km

Off to a bad start this morning. The battery wires came loose and I lost all lights. I cycled to the next town and found an open auto-body shop that helped me repair the broken wires.

687 South Main Street, Blackwell Oklahoma.
I don't remember the Shops name but thank you so much for the help.
The rest of the day went pretty good. Kept a good pace and felt good. I had a little cross headwind the whole day.

Friday, May 27, 2011

68.7mi / 110.6km

Left work this afternoon and did a good stretch up to Tonkawa OK where I camped. It was a very nice road with a section that winds along the river. Just before I reached Tonkawa I met up with a cyclist and was trying to speak to him while cycling and in the process broke the door stop in the back off. Not a to big deal. The door just rubs a little on the frame without it. Solved the problem with a couple of plies of poly tape around the door area. Will have to invent  a much better solution.

Got to the campground after 21:00 and rigged a quick tent with a space blanket.

34.1mi / 54.8km

I packed the velo and is off for a x-country trip today. The goal is to go to Hutchinson KS to visit the parents. Will camp along the road one night and will sleep over at grandma in Wichita KS.

Saturday, May 14, 2011

26.9mi / 43.3km

Just had a nice day out cruising along. Met up with Jay at the Boathouse, went by Elemental Coffee House, Pro Bike and Bike One. Jay took a couple of very cool photos. Cheers

49.3mi / 79.3km

There was severe thunder storms just before I left work today. Lots of rain. I waited till the worst was over but I still had rain almost all the way back home. It was no problem at all. Technically I staid bone dry inside, but there was enough sweat going around. There was a pretty strong SE wind all the way.

34.0mi / 54.7km

Last night I swapped chain rings. The 73t and 54t is now in front.

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

57.9mi / 93.2km

Had a 20mph head wind coming home. I still made good time though. For some reason the gps made two mistakes. Lap 9 and 12 is way off.

33.9mi / 54.6km

It was hard to get up this morning. So I decided to take it very easy. I kept my heart rate just high enough not to fall back asleep. Lucky for me there was a good tail wind and I made it to work in very good time.

Friday, May 6, 2011

8.9mi / 14.4km

On my way to work this morning I had the second flat on the Big Apples. Turns out to be a tire wire that worked its way through. I did not find it the first time around. I decided to take it as a sign and turned around and went back home.

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

38.6mi / 62.1km

Greg joined me tonight for a tour around the lakes in his F40. I enjoyed the company and it made me push a little harder tonight. Did a couple of good sprints.

Sunday, May 1, 2011

35.3mi / 56.9km

Went for an easy ride to see if I am over my cold. I felt a little weak but the good news is, it can only get better now. I also tested the live tracking with Instamapper and it seems to work super. What a great service from Instamapper.

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

72.9mi / 117.3km

This morning was very slow. Legs did not want to move and even the downhills felt like uphills. Things got better though. The ride back started off hard but by the end the legs felt good and strong.

Sunday, April 24, 2011

285.7mi / 459.8km

One super weekend. I was off on Friday so I took the Pterovélo to Tulsa. (127.7mile) I felt pretty good the whole way. On 80mi the feet got little sore but I stopped and ate something and it was all good after that. Greg met me outside Tulsa on his F40. Him and his wife was very generous to let me stay with them the weekend and showed me a good time. Saturday we just putted along the river trail and through the neighborhoods for fun. (26.28mi) The legs were a little tired and lacked some performance. Sunday I left at 7:30 in the rain. It hardly ever stopped and slowed me down a bit but all for the good because the legs were a little worn out. The last 25mi back home was a crawl and the knees has had enough. Walked in the door at 18:00

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

42.5mi / 68.4km

The Pterovélo is back on the road again after two weeks of improvements. We now have much better turn indicators and also added brake lights in the back. The side windows have been replaced and the new wrap looks real good. My fitness unfortunately is down a bit. I started off today with a good 20mph avg but by the end of the ride I was doing 12mph avg. URGH! The turn indicators are working well. The cars notice them now and they are giving me room to move over. What a pleasure to be treated like a vehicle while cycling.

Sunday, April 17, 2011

15.29mi / 24.61km

Spent the Saturday at Earth Day Birthday. A small expo that PlanetNicolsHills.org was hosting. I have not cycled for 10 days now and my legs got quite a shock. The new back lights is almost in and then we will be on the road again.

Friday, April 8, 2011

12.03mi / 19.36km

I got the Pterovélo back from 247 Graphix today and I must say they did a super job. Thanks again guys, I can not stop looking at it. I will post some photos tomorrow.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

12.09mi / 19.46km

Went to drop off the Pterovélo at 247 Graphix this afternoon. Shawn is going to put a brand new wrap on the velo and I will also get some advertising on it. Very exited about it. I took the side windows out to be replaced with new ones later on. It also gave me a change to cut the holes for the new and bigger back lights in the shell. Hopefully this weekend I could install some new brake lights and turn signals.

Saturday, April 2, 2011

87.93mi / 141.51km

Set off this morning to do a couple of errands and then headed South to Lexington, OK. I had a 20mph headwind and thought I am struggling way to much, but.one forget how good you have it. I pull up next to a cyclist and saw on his face how the wind was killing him. We said our hello's and I pulled away from him as if he was standing still. At Lexington I met up with Bob Massengale, the owner of Oklahoma Recumbent Road Bikes. His shop is just supper, with all the recumbents you can think off and not to mention all the trikes. Great guy.
The trip back was supper fun with the wind from the back. There were long stretches where I could hold 29mph.

Run the tires at 50psi today. Could not tell a difference in speed from yesterdays 60psi but it got even smoother.

At last got the new 355 front wheels up and running. The ride is much smoother! I do feel they are heavier but for a commuting tire I think it would be just fine

The am and pm ride is combined. I had to stop way to many times this morning. It made for a pretty slow ride to work. This afternoon was very good though. Felt so good by the time I got to the lake I decided to make a quick loop around, adding an extra 10 miles to the trip. Got stopped again by the police, but the girl laughed so hard when she saw that it is acutaly a bicycle... I made her day.

Was a super ride back home tonight. There was a strong WSW wind, wich normaly on a regular bike would absolutly kill you. The Pterovelo in a cross wind like that acts like a wing and you could feel the aerodinamic force pulling you allong. Even slight uphils then become flat. How amazing is that. I had a smile on my face the whole way home, loving it.

Did a very easy coffee run this morning with the OBS club ride. This evening I pushed it a little harder and tried to keep the spinning high.

2500mile Service Report

The front Kojak's has had enough. Luckily I at last found 355 rims, so the front wheels is getting replaced with the new rims and BigApple tires. The Ultremo R I had on the back is also done. I think it should have lasted longer than that but so be it. The left front brakes is worn down to the bone and is also getting replaced, right is still good.

I used the 39 chainring today. Spin out at about 34mph. I swaped the chain tubes with Teflon tubes and it made the world of difference in drive train noise. Very nice and quite inside now. Went to say hi to Alex at Bike One and he joined me for a lap around the lake. Fun fun fun!

The ride felt faster than what it was. I had a bunch of stops though. Went to the chiropractor, then stopped at the bicycle shop. Saw James in the hospital. Met another trike rider at lake Hefner, recumbentnut@aol.com. Had to stop and pie to many times. Don't know if I drank to much water or not enough. 3.5L

Going home tonight was a little better but still the heart rate does not want to go up. The right wheel is also out of round due to the massive pothole on Tue night. It start to bounce a lot when I go over 30mph.

Had a couple of incidences this evening. First the seat pipe broke. Luckily it was close to work so I was able to cycle back to work and replaced the pipe. Set off again and not to long had a flat. Got that fixed and decided I should just stop at Brahms and get something to eat. Set off again and 15min from home I hit a pothole the size of Jupiter!@#$%#$@ Flat again and broke a spoke. Got that fixed and made it home without any further delays. Stepped in the door at 20:30, what a night.
